Chapter Fourteen
After a brief introduction to Jake and a heavily muscled redhead named Sean, Hannah hurried to the house before anyone could tell Buck she had written the letter that had brought his family. She found no sanctuary. The kitchen was full of strangers. She had never seen such a beehive of activity in her entire life.
"Hello, I'm Isabelle Maxwell, Buck's mother," said a pretty brunette who looked far too young, happy, and carefree to be responsible for this mob. She was cutting enough bacon to feed an army.
"His m-mother," Hannah stuttered.
"Adoptive mother," Isabelle said, her knife poised in midair. She must have noticed Hannah's wide-eyed stare. "I came prepared to do all our cooking outside, but your mother insisted that I use the kitchen. I'm afraid we've taken over."
That was an understatement. Three young men were busy setting the table, bringing in wood and water, and peeling what seemed to be a mountain of potatoes.
"Be glad we didn't bring all the boys," Isabelle said. "We'd have eaten you out of house and home inside a week." She laughed at Hannah's stunned reaction. "Don't worry. We brought our own food."
"It's not that," Hannah said, finally gathering her wits and hoping Isabelle didn't take her for an idiot. "I'm not used to so many people. So much activity. Men helping in the kitchen."
Under these circumstances, Hannah expected her mother to be in a state of hysteria. Instead, she looked calmer and happier than Hannah could remember her ever being.
"My husband and I adopted eleven children," Isabelle said. I made it clear from the start that they had to help or they wouldn't get fed. When I gave birth to a daughter four years ago, it became even more necessary.
"What can I do?" Hannah asked. She was too confused to think for herself.
"We have everything under control here. You probably have chores. Get the younger boys to help. Will is very good at milking if you can keep him on the stool long enough. I don't know about Zac Randolph. He's visiting. I understand he can do just about anything you can trick him into doing."
"If you can get around that brat, you're doing better than I can. He's worse than Will."
Hannah looked into the pale blue eyes of a blond man peeling potatoes. His sensual good looks nearly stunned her. He looked friendly, but there was a coldness in his eyes that chilled her.
"I'm Chet Attmore," he said. "That's my brother, Luke, setting the table. We're getting our turn in the kitchen out of the way early."
"Don't want to miss any of the fun," Luke said. Blond and just as attractive as his brother, he set the table with practiced speed and precision. His eyes were even colder than Chet's. They made Hannah think of Sid Barraclough.
"I'm Matt Haskins," the third blond, blue-eyed man said. "I'm Will's brother."
For all his size, this young man seemed shy, as though he'd rather stay next to the woodbox. It was impossible not to know he was brother to the boy with the angel's face.
